Revive the Wye Chairman and Steering Group

Mike Overall who chaired the Revive the Wye Partnership since its formation in 2007 stood down as RTW chairman at the end of last year and the RTW Steering Group unanimously welcomed Penelope Tollitt as Mike’s successor.

Penelope is well known to supporters of the River Wye as the former Head of Planning and Sustainability at Wycombe District Council. She now runs her own planning and design consultancy, Making Places Together. She is a member of the Chiltern Society and a voluntary non-executive director of Chiltern Rangers.

Penelope and Mike worked together in a gradual handover during the lockdown period, during which time the Steering Group’s activities were necessarily limited.

Penelope is planning to resume Steering Group meetings very shortly, which will provide an opportunity to review RTW’s activities in the light of various changes, including an increased national focus on the need to protect the UK’s precious chalk streams.

Penelope can be contacted here.

Huge thanks to everyone who joined the party of ten River Wye Conservation Volunteers tackling overgrown vegetation on the Hughenden Stream in Hughenden Park.

It proved to be a slow and difficult job, both in the stream and on the banks, but it was well worth the effort and everyone enjoyed the outing.

There is still more to do and if you’d like to join us in the future register your interest now.

Journey’s end – West Wycombe Estate

Willie Reid led fifteen Friends of the Wye on a walk along the river on 3 July 2021.  Willie set a steady pace and he entertained us with some fascinating facts about the river and its no longer extant mill sites.

We took the opportunity to check for invasive Indian balsam, litter and blockages and having spotted none of any significance were very pleased by the overall good condition of the river.

We finished the walk in the grounds of West Wycombe Estate, a little weary maybe, after the 12 miles or so we covered, but having had a very enjoyable day.

Friends of the Wye is very grateful to Willie Reid for leading the walk.  You can find information about Willie’s walks at https://www.walkingwycombewithwillie.co.uk/walks

Thanks to everyone who has let us know of the situation on the Dyke.

It has been reported to Buckinghamshire Council and the Environment Agency.

The BBC has a news item on its web site which you might find interesting. You can find it at: ‘Rancid smell’ coming from lake at the Rye in High Wycombe – BBC News

Hopefully the authorities will soon be able to get the Dyke back to its healthy condition.
