For wellbeing and wildlife

Revive the Wye
River Wye

Our Vision is:

For people to know and love the river and its heritage, and to be able to walk its whole length along a corridor of environmental quality that provides good habitats including the ability for fish to swim unencumbered.

Our Mission is:

To provide a forum for interested parties to exchange information and establish common goals for co-ordinated and complementary actions.

Our Objectives: Heritage, Health & Habitat

  • Heritage: to give a sense of belonging to local people and communities through a greater understanding of its history and ecological value
    and potential.
  • Health: to provide for walking and cycling alongside the river to facilitate physical activity, and support mental health by giving access to
    an attractive waterside environment.
  • Habitat: to remove barriers such as weirs and culverts that impede the ability of fish and other creatures to move freely and to manage
the bed, banks and water quality to give wildlife the best chance within its urban setting.

Tomorrow’s river

The Revive the Wye project is enduring and over time we aim for our actions to result in the river looking like this.

Heritage

  • All local communities along the Wye have a strong sense of ownership of their local river and pride in its heritage.
  • Properties alongside the river follow good riverbank management practice.
  • New and re-development adjoining the river is sympathetically designed and landscaped.
  • A strong enthusiastic force of volunteers conserve the chalk stream characteristics of the river catchment, and promote awareness of its history and special qualities.

Health

  • There is public access to all sections of the river for visitors to walk, relax and experience an attractive waterside environment.
  • The River Wye and its tributaries are recognised places for learning about chalk streams and their ecology.

Habitat

  • The traditional characteristics of a chalk stream are evident and sustainable along the length of the River Wye and the Hughenden Stream.
  • The Environment Agency’s ‘Good Ecological Status’ standard is sustainable for the non-winterbourne lengths of the River Wye and the Hughenden
    Stream.
  • The river has native bankside vegetation and good wildlife habitats.
  • Fish and other river-borne species have free passage of along the river.
  • Invasive vegetation and non-natural waste are controlled.
